The new programme of the Academy of the Arts of the World is built along four thematic axes: found:erased:palimpsest, Sites at Stake, Festival of Original Fakes and Hybrid Transactions. For the programme axis found:erased:palimpsest the Academy is initiating a participatory digital archive project in public space that exists in the context of contemporary memory practices. The term ‘palimpsest’ refers to the overwriting and uncovering of narratives from different time periods, layer upon layer, one atop the next, which are partly hidden or made invisible in light of dominant memory politics.

Together with selected collaborative partners from different districts of Cologne and the NRW region, the Academy will develop and install so-called Memory Stations. These temporary venues or neighbourhood centres will create a space for marginalised narratives and recollections, and will also make them digitally accessible. The memory stations are multifaceted ports of call for memories and stories and thus have a key role to play between the day-to-day life of each neighbourhood, its residents, their stories, and the digital archive. Opening their doors from April 2019 onward, the nine Memory Stations will differ in their artistic programme and in their temporal structure.
